Why is the WebUntis web address (URL) changing?
Instead of grouping schools and listing them under a common URL (e.g. thalia.webuntis.com), each school receives a personalised URL (e.g. gymlienz.webuntis.com). This creates a number of advantages:
- You benefit from a consistently fast connection to WebUntis, as this allows us to respond better to peak times (e.g. in the morning or at the beginning of the school year).
- WebUntis updates can be carried out without interruptions (downtime).
- Malicious attacks from outside – known as DDoS attacks – can be better detected and repelled.
- The changeover brings with it various technical advantages that make our work on the WebUntis infrastructure easier (e.g. automatic database migration).
In short: with this changeover, we can further improve the availability of WebUntis and make work on the server infrastructure easier.
Do WebUntis/Untis Mobile users at my school need to take action and make any changes?
No, all users who access the latest version of the Untis Mobile app will not notice the change. This happens automatically in the background. For older versions of the app, it may be necessary to delete and recreate the user profile in order to access the school again.
Users who access WebUntis via a browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc.) simply need to be informed of the new address during the changeover phase (see below).
How do I know what my new web address is?
For example, your current web address looks like this:
The name after the section <?school=> is the school name. In the example, this is gymlienz. The new address for this school is therefore gymlienz.webuntis.com
Umlauts, spaces and special characters are not permitted in the web address (URL). If such characters are currently included in the school name, we will automatically convert them. For example, an ö will be converted to oe, or a space to –.
You can see what your new web address will look like during the transition phase starting on 12 November in WebUntis under ‘Administration | Settings’.
When will the switch to the new web address take place?
The switch to the new web address will take place between 12 November and 3 December. However, you can decide for yourself when the new web address will be activated during this transition phase.
In some countries (Hamburg, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway), the web address is changed centrally. Schools receive the necessary information from their respective Untis partner or school authority.
How do I activate the new web address?
The WebUntis version that enables the new web address will be rolled out on Wednesday, 12 November, during the course of the day. However, this does not mean that the previous address will become invalid on that day. You can determine the activation time yourself.
Activating the new web address is very easy.
Navigate to Administration | Settings and click on <Edit>.
In the dialog that appears, the new school name will be suggested to you, and you click on <Activate>.
You are all set. Your new web address is now active! From this point on, the previous web address is inactive.
Example
Previous web address:
https://thalia.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=gymlienz
New web address:
https://gymlienz.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=gymlienz
The school name "gymlienz" in the web address has not changed; the server name "thalia" has been replaced by the school name "gymlienz."
Inform the users at your school about the exact time of the transition, which you can schedule yourself between November 12 and December 3.
Note: In your browser, simply enter the address gymlienz.webuntis.com. This will then automatically resolve to the full web address (including /WebUntis/?school=gymlienz).
(After activation, it may take up to 24 hours for this automatic redirection to work.)
The previous school name contains invalid characters
If the previous school name contains characters that are not allowed in the new school name – such as umlauts or spaces – a valid school name will be suggested automatically.
Example
Previous web address:
https://thalia.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=schöne schule
New web address:
https://schoene-schule.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=schoene-schule
The previous school name "schöne schule" is replaced by the technically valid name "schoene-schule".
I would like to change my suggested school name
You can change the suggested school name in the web address at any time. How to change the school name in the web address yourself is described in detail in the section ‘I don't like my new WebUntis address. Can I change it?’
Tip: Secure your preferred school name in the web address as soon as possible and share it with all users right away (see section ‘What do I need to do as a WebUntis administrator during the transition phase (from 12 November to 3 December)?’).
Note: In some countries (Hamburg, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway), the web address is changed centrally. Schools receive the necessary information from their respective Untis partner or school authority.
ATTENTION: If you do not activate the new web address yourself, it will automatically become valid on December 3rd at 11:00 a.m. and the previous one will lose its validity.
What do I need to do as a WebUntis administrator during the transition phase (from 12 November to 3 December)?
- Share the new web address with your colleagues. If some people fail to notice the change, it's no big deal. Your school can still be found as usual via the school search engine webuntis.com.
- If your WebUntis web address is linked somewhere, you will need to replace this link (or have it replaced).
A typical example: You have placed a link to your WebUntis on your school's website.
Click here for the current timetable
The link currently refers to:
https://thalia.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=gymlienz
Once the new web address has been activated, the link must be replaced with:
https://gymlienz.webuntis.com
- If you display a monitor view (e.g. for the entrance area of your school), you must update this link with the new web address.
- If you have linked the consultation hours list, remember to replace this link as well:
https://thalia.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=gymlienz#/basic/officehours becomes https://gymlienz.webuntis.com/WebUntis/?school=gymlienz#/basic/officehours . - If you use the WebUntis link to display class register entries in Untis Mobile, you must update this link with the new address. Instructions for doing so can be found HERE (in german).
- Please also bear in mind that your school administration systems may contain links to WebUntis, which will also need to be updated. If you have any questions about this, please contact the manufacturer of your school administration software.
What do I need to do as a timetable or substitute planner?
Ensure that Untis - WebUntis communication is working from the changeover date. To do this, open the WebUntis export dialogue in Untis and check that the correct school name is selected.
You can then see immediately whether the Untis-WebUntis connection is working.
I don't like the new address of my WebUntis. Can I change it?
Yes, you can easily change this yourself.
So if you don't want the web address to be gymlienz.webuntis.com, but rather bg-brg-lienz.webuntis.com, for example, you can make this change yourself in WebUntis.
ChatGPT:
To do this, navigate to Administration | Settings using your administrator account, and click Edit under Custom web address, as shown below:
In the window that opens, you will see the requirements for the new school name as well as additional information. In the input field at the bottom left of the window, you can enter the personalized web address according to your preferences. Depending on the country, school, or school type, the suffix — in this case, for example, “.webuntis.com” — is not adaptable and therefore cannot be changed.
Note: In some countries (Hamburg, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway), the web address is changed centrally. Schools receive the necessary information from their respective Untis partner or school authority.
Can I still rename my web address after December 3rd?
Yes, you can rename the WebUntis web address at any time (even multiple times) after December 3rd. However, please note that renaming always requires the adjustments described above.
Do any changes need to be made to the docked platform applications?
If you have docked applications for data exchange and/or single sign-on via the WebUntis platform (e.g. Klassengeld, teachino, etc.), you do not need to do anything. These will continue to function as before.
Will anything change in terms of school search?
No, searching for schools via webuntis.com works exactly as before. You can still find your school using the same parameters as before: school name, address, location, etc.
I log in to WebUntis via Single Sign On (SSO). Do I need to change anything now?
No, the technical changeover took place before 1 July 2025. Details can be found HERE.
What should I do if I have integrated my timetable into my private calendar via an iCal subscription?
Changing your school's web address also changes the iCal link. To continue displaying your timetable in your private calendar, you must regenerate the iCal link once and use it instead of the existing one.
I am using software that is connected via the WebUntis API. What do I need to bear in mind?
You may be using additional software that is connected to WebUntis via our WebUntis API (interface jsonrpc.do).
We have been providing this interface on request for many years, primarily for school projects, student developments or smaller in-house developments. External service providers have also used it in isolated cases.
The good news is that the API itself remains unchanged and continues to function as before. The only change is the address (URL) used to access the interface.
To ensure that your integrations continue to run smoothly, only one small step is necessary:
- Adjust the (sub-)domain used and the school name (?school=).
NOTE: All apps that you have activated via the WebUntis platform are not affected by this change.
